Harleigh brought me many firsts. She was the first Malamute I show trained, the first Malamute I finished completely owner handled, and the first Malamute I had to say goodbye to.
Harleigh was a fighter. She was born into a horrible Coronavirus outbreak in 2013, which saw her entire litter struggling to survive. Once it became clear they were improving I went to Kasaan Kennels to help with pictures. I knew from a very early age that Harleigh was the one I wanted, and I'm sure it drove Bonnie crazy that I had chosen a puppy prior to 8 weeks of age. As any good mentor does, she assured me that picks wouldn't be made until that 8 week mark, and that I would be getting one of the two girls that she had intended to keep. At 8 weeks of age Tex and Patty Ann of SnoKlassic Kennels came to evaluate litter with Bonnie. Bonnie chose Smooch as her keeper and let Harleigh go with me on co-ownership. I was thrilled! This was the puppy I wanted from this litter and I had big plans for her! Little did I know Harleigh had big plans for me. Harleigh never really enjoyed showing, which is something I take full responsibility for, and yet she somehow finished with 2 specialty wins and 4 majors at 15 months old with a novice handler. Harleigh went on to bless Bonnie and I with 4 beautiful litters before retiring to the couch. RIP my Harleigh Bear, until we meet again.
Harleigh was a substantial bitch who very much represented the standard, with huge feet and bone, perfect tail set, small ears, beautiful headpiece, and dark eyes.
